Simple form excercises

Going back to basics. When I got the brief my initial reaction was to jump on the mac and start exploring the square in regard to the list given. I tried to avoid doing this, if my experiments used unfamiliar materials I might get some unexpected results and it was nice to work really hands on again. BUT I must admit it is hard to fulfill all the criteria using ice, 3d boxes, light, tape, forks etc. And so jumping back on the mac was inevitable.

My first set of experiments were for Space & Form: line, plane,
mass, void.

I put these together in a simple quicktime movie and produced a 2d visual from part of the sequence that may work printed as poster form.

Secondary Research

A visit to Tate Modern to the Theo van Doesburg exhibition was very inspiring for simple form excercises.

I love these De Stijl inspired noted books in the gift shop!

Line – Time & Meter

Some visual experiments looking at Line,Time and Meter, these turned into weave experiments with scraps of paper.

Duster alphabet

Working as a group we created an alphabet from yellow dusters.

How many times can a square piece of paper be folded?

Working with Federica Chiarcossi we cut and stuck 2 whole metro newspapers together with brown tape to create a massive square. We then created a stop motion animation of her going around the square seeing how small it could be folded.

Exploration 02

Then I started thinking how a square can be divided into four squares, and each of them folded up into four squares again, and so on....

How many times can a piece of paper/card be folded?

Exploration 01

The dictionary on my mac (amongst many things) says a square is:
“A plane figure with four equal straight sides and four right angles.”

My initial thoughts are to find something that comes in multiples to photograph creating a square; Cutlery, pens, shoes, carrots, celery, spaghetti.....
I decided that forks were interesting to make a study from as they are identically formed (unless odd) and you can change them around to make different iterations.

In hindsight it might have been interesting to collect lots of odd forks from junk shops and create a series of even and uneven squares. But it still isn't flexible enough to explore all the things on the list with.

1.1.1 Form

My brief for 1.1.1 is to explore the form of the square.
A series of projects interrogating attributes of visual form.

Including:
Space & Form
line/plane/mass/void

Time & Meter
rhythm/order/motion sequence

Light & Colour
hue/tint/tone/saturation/transparency/opacity

Exploit unfamiliar and untested; media/locations/processes/materials/textures.
In order to review my working process effectively I have decided to keep an online diary of this which I will endeavor to update regularly. The point being that this is accessible for assessment but also for my peers to view and comment on. I am hoping this will help push my research processes and increase the success of the final piece.
